Frequently asked questions.

What should I bring to my class?

Our classes include all the clay and pottery tools required.
We recommend wearing comfortable clothes (and keep in mind they may get dirty), closed toe shoes,
some students also like to bring along an apron, but this is not essential and we do have some we can provide if required.
For wheel classes we also recommend bringing along an old towel.

What if I need to cancel?

Please refer to our Terms and Conditions page for more info regarding cancellations.

When can I collect my creation?

It usually takes approximately 4 weeks for your work of art to be ready to collect.
Due to the unpredictable nature of pottery we can’t give you an exact date until it is finished, at which time we will send you an email to let you know it is ready to collect.
We ask that you please collect your pieces as soon as possible, ideally within 2 weeks of us contacting you to advise they are ready, to avoid any unfortunate breaks or losses.

Is there parking available?

There is ample street parking available near our entrance on Amherst Street, or the adjoining streets.
Please kindly refrain from using the parking bays outside Blinc & Co on Blinco Street, or in front of our neighbours Sourc Studios on Amherst Street.

Can I make what ever I want in the class?

Whilst we generally give each class a theme or topic this is merely to help with ideas or guidance.
Our tutors are there to teach you the technique, and then guide you to help make your creative visions come to life!
You are only restricted by your own imagination, and of course if you run out of time you can just book another class in which to finish off your creation.
If you are feeling rather ambitious we recommend discussing your ideas with the tutor once they have finished the demonstrations in class.
To ensure you have quality pieces that you love at the end of the class, we recommend limiting yourself to 2 pieces, 3 maximum, to ensure you don’t rush through the process.

Do you offer Gift Vouchers?

Yes, we now offer Gift Vouchers in a range of values to suit every budget.
These can be purchased via our Book Your Workshop page.

Can I book a private event?

We are more than happy to accomodate groups for private events such as Hens parties, Corporate Team Building, Christmas parties and Birthdays.
Please feel free to email to cathy@pricklypearstudios.com.au so we can help you plan your event.

Do you run kids classes?

Yes, we occasionally will run kids classes during school holidays and for special events such as Easter and Christmas.
Children aged 5 - 7 can be enrolled in handbuilding classes, and children aged 7 - 14 can be enrolled in both handbuilding and wheel classes.

Our tutors love introducing the joy of working with clay to young people.
During your childs workshop you are welcome to pop next door to our neighbours Blinco & Co and enjoy a complimentary coffee courtesy of Prickly Pear Studios for the duration of the workshop.
Of course we will phone you if your child is upset or needs you.

As we are located in a shared warehouse with a variety of friends including a Tattoo Studio we ask that you please ensure your children are aware they must behave in a safe and social manner at all times.

Working with clay can get messy at the best of times so we recommend your child attends the workshop in comfortable clothing, including closed toe shoes, that you don’t mind getting a little dirty.
Long hair should be tied back, and loose ties or ribbons ect should be avoided to prevent anything getting caught in machinery or pottery wheels.

We encourage children bring a water bottle, clearly labelled with their name, and as no food is to be eaten during the studio, we suggest they have a meal before starting their 2 hour workshop.

Can I book time in the studio?

Yes! For more experienced potters we are happy to offer the use of the studio and our tools, including our pottery wheels, outside of class times for a small fee. Check out our Casual Studio Session page for more info.

What are your open hours?

As we mainly operate scheduled classes we do not have standard opening hours, however if there is anything you require you are welcome to send an email to cathy@pricklypearstudios.com.au where we can assist with any queries you may have.

Do you offer a firing service?

For our wonderfully creative friends who enjoy making their ceramic creations outside of our classes, we offer a firing service.

Our prices are based on the weight of the items.
Bisque firing: $9 per kilo
Mid fire: $11 per kilo
High fire: $12 per kilo
Minimum fee of $6

With an average mug weighing around 250 - 350 grams we hope to make this service affordable and accessible for all.
(All our classes include firing in the cost.)
